They are involved in the regeneration of active 11-cis-retinol and 11-cis-retinal from the inactive 11-trans product of the rhodopsin chromophore, as well as the de novo synthesis of these retinols from 11-trans metabolic precursors. The cycle of retinoic acid between photoreceptor cells and adjacent pigment epithelial cells is known as the "visual cycle".
