PubMed PubMed Product Detail The mitochondrial membrane ATP synthase (F(1)F(0) ATP synthase or Complex V) generates ATP from ADP under the action of the proton gradient produced by the electron transport complexes of the respiratory chain. F-type ATPases consist of two domains: F(1), which contains the catalytic core outside the membrane, and F(0), which contains the membrane proton channel, connected by a central stalk and a peripheral stalk. During catalysis, ATP synthesis in the F(1) catalytic domain is coupled to proton transport through a rotational mechanism. Subunits α and β form the catalytic core in F(1). The central stalk rotating around the α(3)β(3) subunits causes ATP hydrolysis at three separate catalytic sites on the β subunits. The α subunit does not have a catalytic high-affinity ATP-binding site. It binds the bacterial siderophore enterobactin and can promote the accumulation of enterobactin-derived iron ions in mitochondria.
