CDCF is a fluorescent product of 5(6)-carboxy-2’,7’-dichlorodihydrofluorescein diacetate and 5(6)-carboxy-2’,7’. Cell-permeable 5(6)-carboxy-2’,7’-dichlorodihydrofluorescein diacetate (H2DCFDA) (also known as dichlorofluorescein diacetate) is a chemically reduced form of fluorescein that is used as an indicator of reactive oxygen species (ROS) in cells, for example,to detect the production of reactive oxygen species intermediates in neutrophils and macrophages. After cleavage of acetate groups by intracellular esterases and oxidation,non-fluorescent H2DCFDA are converted to highly fluorescent CDCF. 5(6)-Carboxy-2’,7’-dichlorofluorescein diacetate staining is used to study multidrug resistance proteins [MRP and P-glycoprotein (Pgp)].
