It plays an important role in wound healing, myocardial hypertrophy, and heart development and function. The transmembrane form of HB-EGF is a unique receptor for diphtheria toxin and plays a role in signaling in cells. HB-EGF is involved in normal physiological and pathological processes, including tumor progression and metastasis, organ proliferation, and atherosclerotic disease.
