SWISS: P07202 Gene ID: 7173 Thyroid peroxidase (TPO) is a hemoglobin-like substance containing iron porphyrin, located on the apical cell membrane of thyroid epithelial cells. The main biological functions of TPO are to activate iodine, iodinate tyrosine, and promote the coupling of iodinated tyrosine. It plays a key role in the synthesis of thyroid hormones - serving as a crucial enzyme in the thyroid hormone synthesis process.
